Melanochromis auratus are one of the best

For what? Demolition?
No, M. auratus (or chipokae or joanjohnsonae or paralellus or johannii or cyanoerhabdos or ANY Melanochromis for that matter) would not be a suitable choice for a 30 gallon tank.

LOL I like this thread

I have 3 30 gal tanks and agree with most of what everyone is saying however I do not think that keeping malawi's in a 30 is a good Idea as the tank does not allow the proper space for the size of fish to be comfortable

A 30 gal tank is fine for temperary grow out of malawi fry for this tank I would recommend something like a group of Paracyprichromis say 2 males and 4 females
Plenty of vertical rockwork and some drift wood

I thought that 30 gallon tanks are for tropical fish, hospital, breeding, fry and grow out tanks not for perminately housing cichlids.:D

Hi All New Here.

I would recommed the demasoni, this guy stays small and is a blast to watch. I had one in a tank but he recently died so i am looking for another. (He got cought between a rock and the filter, set up a hospital tank but he didn't make it)

The Demasoni was one of my favourite fish, he was quick so i didn't have to worry about him with the other fish in the tank eating him, and he is a dwarf cichlid so stay between 2 - 3 inches long.

Another thing, with a 30 Gallon, I would stock about 7-8 fish in there. Let me know what you are thinking of doing and I can tell you if it will be compatible together. With the Yellow lab in there your probably gonna have a pretty docile tank.
