I'm going to be ordering a 48" x 18" x 25" acrylic (93.5064931 US gallons/353.960582 liters) from glasscages.com, gonna pick it up on 6 or 7 Jan 2007.

Here's the criteria

1. Predatory
2. Doesn't require more than a fluval 405 + emp 400 for filtration (I'll be using them simultaneously)
3. Preferably saltwater, as I find SW fish are in general much more active than FW fish, but I'm open to suggestions
4. No piranhas (personally think they're overrated, plus I need to get a permit if I want to keep one in new york)

Right now I'm thinking

1. Clown triggerfish, species only tank (even though 120-gal is the "minimum" for clowns, until they get up to like 10"~12" I won't need to move it to one that big... I only plan on having this guy until then anyway so he should be fine)
2. 2~3 picasso triggerfish + radiata lionfish

What do you guys think? Thanks for your time and input. :)

only thing i would suggest out of what you listed would be a radiata lionfish. theyre awesome. if you want one of those you should get some hawkfish(arc eye, blood red) or porcupinefish. Triggers ar eok, but they arent worth the upkeep, they damage your wires in the tank, filter, any decor they dont like... they will bite u REALLY REally HARD WHEN YOUR CLEANING..

i'd highly recomend a Marine betta too with the lion. theyre awesome

I was actually wondering, do you think I can keep three radiata in a 90-gal? Dr. Foster and Dr. Smith from LiveAquaria.com say the minimum requirement for a radiata is 30 gallons. A marine biology book on species I read said that radiata do very well in small groups in larger tanks. So I figure 90 gallons, get three so the aggression is spread evenly, have many many many places to hide and I should be okay right?

I'm actually a big, big fan of the radiata. :)

The radiata is the main reason why i am setting up my 55. i have wanted one for 3 years, and i have only seen one at aLFS. My tank is far from setup, so i am constantly changing my idea;s for the tank.. althought it says a minimum of 30G thats when the fish is adolescent. the fish atleast needs a tank of 75 for life. For 2-3 of them, i think they would be fine in a 90G as long as you do 3 things.
1) add specimens at the same time
2)have lots of live rock, with lots of hiding spots.. (120 lbs of rock)
3)Feed them WELL!.

i used ot want a couple of lionfish, in my 90G i have for FW. i would want some radiata's and a shoal of pineapple fish if i could get them.

What book u reading? i bet i have it!

get an emporer snapper, i love them and they can get along with clown trigs.

#2 is the only one I'm worried about, #1 and #3 I can definitely do. :D That's really good news by the way, that I can keep multiple ones.

If I order like 50 lbs of live rock, and then have another 70 lbs of regular lava rock or something, how long would it take for the 50 lbs to seed the other 70 lbs (and sand)?

Edit: I don't really like groupers, they're big and scary and eat lots. I like fish that eat a lot but I like the really pretty ones (as you can tell - clown, picasso, radiata... etc. :P).

If you are going to "Seed" the base rock into live rock, u need to do that before adding any fish, as to my knowledge.. ive been researching this recently and you need to get like a bunch of base rock and argonite sand put it in the tank with salt water and drop in a Shrimp like the one in a supermarket, let the shrimp rot, and follow ur nitrate and nitrite and ammonia levels, they will skyrocket! and then begin to go down back to 0. they do this becuase the tank grows HELPFUL bacteria which is better then a filter!!! obviously u need a filter, but without that bacteria nothing wil live.. so after your levels have gone back to 0, you then add really nice figi rock in the tank.. then with everythin running it should seed the base rock. This whole process can take various lenghths of time depending how good you are at this.. from 3 weeks to 2 months... its worht it so save 100's of dollars tho

by the way, if u only want live rock and live sand and a fish only tank u only need a GOOD protein skimmer, not really afilter...

I'd rather not use live rock actually, because once I'm done with the fluval or emp I can just sell them. Selling live rock is a lot trickier. Also, I wouldn't have to buy a separate powerhead to create a current.

I'm sure you've read up more on radiata than I have - do they produce more or less waste than the average SW fish? Would I be okay with running the fluval 405 + emp 400 and 30 lbs of live rock, and 70 lbs of additional rock for hiding? Also - I'm pretty sure live rock seeds base rock automatically, just like how it'll seed the sand automatically.
