What should I put over open 1.5 inch drain pipes?

You can't go wrong with the ones they have at BRS or you choice of e-tailer. If space is an issue they are good since for a durso you'll have the vertical space and possibly not enough horizontal.

The one thing I'd change i go with threaded. It's easier to remove when wet if you dont connect too tightly. For me it's easier to make turns than stick hand down and pull off.

You could diy a strainer as well that would would work. The top image is a project I am working on using 4" pvc sewage pipe. For your application you could use a uniseal at the bottom slide your stand pipe into it and notch or drill holes in the top at whatever level you want. You could also use a coupler inside the 4" pipe so you could change out different stand pipes at different levels until you got one that had the right amount of flow and acceptable noise level. By using the uniseal you should be able to adjust the height of the weir as well. If the stand pipes are glued you may not want to try this approach, because it can be difficult to get the pipe through the uniseal, but the second image shows another approach that would probable work well and would only require getting a 1.5" adapter.

I found an inset strainer at Home Depot that unfortunately made the pipes make an obnoxious howeling sound that my wife vetoed, lol.

I appreciate the advice and input. Does the low profile strainer result in a worse sound than the pipe alone. New variable is wife happiness, lol.

Lol, I went through that with my tank and my wife. About the best thing you can do for noise is to use ball valves to put the overflows just under water and are full siphon. This makes them completely silent.

If you don't mind a little bit of water noise then you could check out putting the H2Overflows on top of them. The H2Overflow is meant to sit inside a 1.5" female pvc fitting. It will give you great surface skimming, run somewhat quieter, and keep any fish out of the overflow.

You can take the strainer part by itself and put it on top of your 1.5" overflow.
