What size do female RTMs get their red?

so if you were to sex a pair, it could be done at 5" or even 4"? Does it vary from fish to fish or no?
above is female (?) at 3"
below the same one at 5"
I'd say 5" is reasonable, but it's all about the small spots on the gill plate, not really color.

My female rtm that recently passed was showing prominent red and blues by the 3" mark. And of course I can't find a good photo amongst the 1000s of fish pics I have lol.

Do the males get the spots around the same time she gets the reds or what?
Here he is now...when I picked him out at my lfs at an even smaller size than in the previous pic his profile seemed male to me.....
