What size glass thickness would I need for a tank this size? Please help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have never built a plywood tank but if I were going to I would use acrylic just for the fact that it is a better insulator and heating will be easier but I am no expert just my logic. Good luck with the build buddy! Also if anyone more experienced wants to correct me please do I am sure it won't just be Andrew who learns/uses this thread.

3/4 " glass is going to run you about $21 per square foot.

Let's say your glass is going to be less 3" on all sides of the front of your tank for simplicity.

So you're looking at 90"X34", which is 21.25 square feet of glass.

So you're looking at about $446.25 just in the front pane of your glass. Acrylic will cost more.

Look at West Systems epoxy resin and Pond Armor prices too. West systems 105 is $350 for 4 gallons, and pond armor is about $300 for 1.5 gallons. If you use epoxy resin, you're going to need fiberglass cloth as well.

So between the glass and fiberglass and/or pond armor, we're talking $800-900 right off the bat. Include your lumber, stainless steel screws, plumbing, silicone, lids, etc... and you're right at about $1500 or more if you do everything right and dont have to scrap it and start over.

I'd seriously start adding up how much this is all going to cost if I were you, and weigh the cost against just buying a new acrylic tank from a reputable company. It's going to cost about the same unless you have contacts that can get you glass and/or sealing materials for cheap.

I have sources lol I can get it cheaper. My dad has no problem with the cost as long as I don't need a bigger tank for my stock. And at this size there aren't to many fish is buy that could outgrow this tank.

just an fyi but 21$/sqft is glasscages.com price, a local supplier will be AT LEAST 25% cheaper.

Yes. That quote was from glass cages. I'm interested to see what he's coming up with locally though. I wasn't about to call and bug my glass guy to see what 3/4 " costs since I'm not ordering anything rit now, though.

Lol sorry guys I completely forgot to look. :( I got sidetracked. But, ill look this weekend locally and see what I can find.
