Well, some folks hate u style overflows like the eshopps. Ive used them in my garage setups for years with no troubles, but they are alot harder to make quiet, and they can lose prime. Ive never had an issue with them though. The more involved your drain system becomes, generally the more quiet you can make it.

Ive seen some pretty inventive ways to approach the hob style overflow, but at the end of the day they will create more noise than a drilled tank with a Herbie or Beananimal. I'd carefully consider your location for noise levels and decide what it best for you. If noise is not big issue, then the sky's the limit......

I have basically unlimited 45g drums food grade. Im debating running all my tanks 75g and up off a single massive sump. Consisting of 4 of these drums. Is there a huge downside to this?

I still have some tanks using overflow boxes with U tubes, but in the end I'd like to drill them all. I've had tubes lose prime and then the tanks overflow on the floor, and had the U tubes get plugged with gunk and the same problem.
Though nothing is totally fool proof, I like the odds better with a drilled tank.
I also have 2" PVC run Teed off from drilled tanks either directly outside in summer, or to a drain in winter. That way, I open a valve, and 100 gals or so of old water goes to waste in 5 minutes making water changes, fast and painless.
In the pic below, when the red valve is opened, water that normally goes to a sump, ends up in the garden.

My plan seems to be going in the 45g drum direction. 1 drum has mechanical filtration and 25l of k1 kaldness. 2nd drum will also have 25l of k1 kaldnes, 3rd wil hold plants and heaters, 4th will house many submersible pumps. This willl be used on
75g
90g
140g
135g

Will add more as time goes. Working on finding a source of K1 kaldnes now.
