Im considering picking up a 135 gallon for $100. The reason i havent already bought it is because it is drilled for a sump and i have no experience with sumps at all and find the whole idea of one quite difficult as i know nothing about them. I have fluval fx5 filters on all my large tanks which are as simple as dropping in a couple lines and plugging into the wall. Id prefer just to hook up another fx5 to the tank as i have 2 not being used right now but for $100 I cant pass up the deal. My question is what size sump will a 135 gallon need and what size/brand pump. What size plumbing etc etc... Thanks

Know of any build plans for a 55? What diameter plumbing? Whats the best pump to get?

Do they make some sort of cap? Whats the best method to plug them?

Do you have overflows built in or just holes drilled. If it's just holes you can get bulk heads to plug them and do your cans. I would recommend not writing off a sump though. I love mine

There are just holes. If i knew how to build a sump id give it a shot. I dont know where to place the dividers in one, how far they need to be spaced apart etc etc. Its just easier to run the fx5s.

First thing to think of is what style of sump you want. Submerged emerged or fluidized. Sumps are not difficult to build. King of diy joey02 joey02 shows all three types of sumps and easiest ways to build them as well as sizing pump and overflows. If you could grab a picture of the tank it would be alot easier to suggest ideas

I watched joeys videos. They are informative but he doesnt mention spacing dimensions etc. The tank is a standard 135 gallon with one hole drilled in the upper right hand corner of the tank for the return im assuming. There is only one hole in the top right corner

you can also plumb the fx5s through the existing holes. the installation will look better than the hoses on the side. it depends on the existing hole placement and the type of fish you are gonna keep.

plugging the holes is simple, get the appropriate bulkhead (threaded) and use a threaded plug (with teflon pipe tape).
