What size sump for 135 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have some red tiger moto grow outs around 5inch also have around 12 rio tumbes festae growouts i could put in it. Not sure which ones i will put in, probably the motos as the festae are still around 2". I plan on picking it up tomorrow afternoon. The hole doesnt sound like its as big of a concern as i thought it was, sounds like i have options. Where is a good place to get the bulkhead? Bulk reef supply?

I will check out their site. Thanks for the help fellas

Just checked out the flexpvc.com site. Going to have to shoot them an email to see which one i need. You were correct with the "all sorts of plumbing goodies".

You don't need any dividers at all in your sump. Just a completely open tank, a bag of Pond Matrix, and a pump. That's all that's in your canisters if you think about it, right?

get a Laguna max-flo 1350, or a Laguna Max-flo 2000--probably, since I don't know what size holes are drilled, what size and how many drains you'll have--I'm totally guessing.

Get some Loc-line, T's, NPT-Loc-line fittings, and maybe even 4 of those loc-line flare nozzles. Get the loc-line pliers, too--you don't have to have them, but they're make it easy. http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/pumps-plumbing/plumbing/loc-line.html?gclid=CKak3N7uzs8CFQKHaQodElUC-g

And put a check valve in the return line so your tank doesn't siphon if the power goes out.

I agree with ragin cajun, I never put any dividers in my sumps, and size is whatever you want. Whatever size fits under the tank, if you want your sump under the tank.
But even that is up to you, I put some sumps below the tank, some off to the side or some above on a window ledge, you can even put a sump in the basement if your tank is on the 1st floor, in order to reduce pump and water flow noise, or to help maintain a cooler temp.
I have also used a 1500 gallon pond as a sump for a 55 gal tank.
Your only restriction may be the holes already drilled in the tank, that determine pump size.
I always use all drill holes for the overflows, but never for returns. I like to have plumbing above the tank for flow of return water , to provide agitation at the waters surface.
2 overflow holes allow for more pump age per gallon. But that is strictly personal preference.
