so the guy at my local petstore said the general rule is one gallon per inch of fish is this just a terrible rule of thumb or what because what im reading is it is...

nope. that rule is useless. dont follow it. it basically states that a 10" oscar can live in a 10gal tank, which is obviously false.

this is what i was thinking, so as a general rule of thumb does anyone have any?

It's really hard to come up with a rule of thumb, because when you're dealing with aggressive fish, the footprint of the tank is more important than volume. For example, 2 Oscars in a 4-foot 110 would likely tear each other to shreds when adults, but it might work in a 6-foot 125. Also, the bioload of the fish has to be considered -- how much does it eat (because that's how much waste it produces!). So, there's really no "rule of thumb" when it comes to stocking. I usually understock just to be sure, because I think it results in better water quality and less-stressed fish.

To be honest I think 150 just because oscars get big and blood parrots and terrors can get territorial.and I'm sure the shark could survive I mean I have a tiger barb that has survived with 2 oscars and they don't bother him at all

The "inch per gallon" rule was developed for community tanks, in which case it works pretty well, ie...5 2" or 10 1" tetras in a 10 gal. For monsters though, obviously it's inaccurate based on mass...10 1"long Neons do not equal the waste production of 1 10" Oscar...and I really don't think a 240" (20 foot) fish will fit in my 6' 240 gal...

You learn real quick not to listen to the guy at your local petstore.

I am really confused as to how all of these fishes can fit in 125g while 1 oscar + 2 JD needs 300g?

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=280302&page=2

Are JDs that much more aggressive than the line-up you see in this thread?

read the whole thread, one guy said 300g, the rest of us said 125g in that situation. play the odds. 10-15 mfkers who have been keeping fish ranging from 7 years all the way up to 25yrs all agree 125 is a good size for the setup in that thread.

one trolls says otherwise.

what are the odds that he's right and we're all wrong?
