I kept our MBU in a 220 for about 2 years and she was about 12" when I accidentally fed her some bad shellfish.
But in the tank was also some CL's and two small fronts and I am pretty sure they could have stayed in harmony for another year or so before needing an upgrade.
The 3' wide footprint was the key, also the 90G sump and dual FX5's with the 40W UV all kept the setup safe and clean.

My wife and I both miss that fish more than any other we have ever owned.
I am quite sure that was the only fish she would have allowed me to build a 1000+ tank for.

300-400, I personally think 1000g is bonkers. Obviously they would prefer a 1000g or a 2000g or even a 3000g at that rate, but I think once you reach a 1000g for a 2ft odd fish where do you draw the line?

Who says they'e only 2'? With the proper housing/food/filtration,there is absolutely no reason it wouldn't exceed it's wild counterparts.

Yeah i'll house my daughter in the biggest house imaginable, give her the best food and cleanest air and she'll be 10ft tall in no time..:nilly:

I'm just staggered by that comment...

Way to take things out of context. That wasn't what pp said, fish like everything that has a genetic code is pre-programmed to grow to a certain size and then stop, we can increase the chances that an animal will reach its max height through good care, adequate housing, etc (epigenetics). What she is saying is that the fact that you guys think that a mbu will only grow to 24inches is wrong, in fact I'm not sure if the actual max length has been determined yet longest I've heard to date is 32inches.

^ Thats what i have been thinking too... Do we really know what the actual max size of an MBU is.... I think fish base listed them at max size 28" but as you just said, you've seen 30"+ MBU's

No one knows a lot of the details about these fish but everyone seems to be an expert as to what they need....

I agree, theres probably a lot we don't know about MBU and other fish... especially a lot of the monsters kept on these boards such as the GATF, since lets be honest, not many people could give them as much space as they need to grow as large if not larger than there wild counterparts... whether that is through lack of research or financial reasons or otherwise...

As for the experts, i still don't really see any one claim to be an expert... but i think every one just has their opinion on whats best for their fish or a fish they dream of keeping... as i've stated many times before, my belief for the large tank size comes from the fact i find a 200G to be tight for a fahaka and would much rater see her in a 300G+ tank if not larger... so for me to place an MBU in anything less than an 800G just doesn't seem right...

Again, that is my personal belief, and i know not every one agrees on that... but thats the main reason i'll never own an MBU coz i don't ever plan on having space for a 1000G tank, especially not in Hong Kong where that living space comes as an absolute premium...
