what size tank needed for a silver aro?

considering silvers can reach over 4 feet in a couple of years im hoping that u have a suitable back up plan in about 3-4 years. hopefully a pond or a huge tank!

From experience, I can tell you that silver aros will grow 24" in 1 year. You may want to get something larger.

Yes silvers grow fast but this is far from the norm. What size did this aro start at?

Show me a silver aro kept in a home aquarium that is 4 foot long. There is only one silver here on MFK that is even 3 foot. Maybe in 15-20 years a silver can get to be 4 foot, but doughtful.

do you really plan on keeping him for his whole life? thats a long time and being that it would outgrow the 240... imagine trying to transfer the large aro into a 300. that would suck and you would need a big net.

i thought a 3' width is almost necessary for a full grown silver to turn comfortably.

What are the dimensions of the 240g? Typically it is 96" x 24" x 24". Spend a little more and get a 300g wide the dimensions are 96" x 30" x 24". With the added 6" of width you could possibly keep a silver in that tank for life.

I agree with Bdereick...the added width will work wonders. If you buying the tank new, you might as well pony up the extra cash now instead of having to do it again down the road.

If you're simply deciding between two tanks that are available, I would go with the 240 if its the standard dimension. The 220s that I've seen are the same footprint as a 180...just taller.

yeah i agree i guess im going to be saving some extra cash fo a 300. i want to get a aro and i want him to be happy in there and not crowded in the tank so im going for a 300 if i cant get a 300 i wont buy an aro untill i have the right tank size.

speaking "for the life" of an aro is being nice, but talk realistic for most keepers in this world. if you can provide 2-4 years of life to ur aro, he had a decent life. most aros out there dont even last 2 years, let alone buying a home for an aro for life when most people can't provide life for the aro.

a 180 is a good start, should be sufficient for 4 years atleast, just ask delgado...

a 240 is being real nice, he should get atleast 4-6 years out of it...

but like bderick said, a 300 would be great, he'd be fine for 10yrs plus if not his entire life.
