SO HERE IS THE PROBLEM! WE ARE DEBATING BETWEEN A 125 GALLON AND 150 GALLON. THE 125 IS 72X18X22 FOR $611(TANK AND STAND) AND THE 150 IS 72X18X25 FOR $794(TANK AND STAND). WE WILL BE PUTTING OUR AMERICAN CICHLIDS FROM OUR WAY TOO SMALL 75GALLON IN THE NEW TANK. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE SURFACE AREA IS MORE IMPORTANT THEN THE ACTUAL NUMBER OF GALLONS WHEN FIGURING OUT HOW MANY FISH THE TANK CAN HOLD. WOULD WE BE ABLE TO HOUSE MORE FISH WITH THE 5 EXTRA INCHES IN HEIGHT? OR WOULD THEY BOTH BE ABLE TO HOLD THE SAME AMOUNT OF AMERICAN CICHLIDS? ITS ALMOST $200 TO HAVE THE EXTRA 25GALLONS.... THIS SEEMS LIKE ALOT OF MONEY. AND THE ONLY REASON I'D STEP UP TO THE LARGER TANK IS IF WE COULD KEEP MORE FISH OR IT CUT BACK ON AGGRESSION. WE ARE LEANING MORE TOWARDS THE 125GALLON... ANYONE HAVE ANY INPUT ON OUR SITUATION?? :headbang2

It's true the surface area, or footprint, is more important than height with SA/CA cichlids. Six inches of width will increase how many fish you can keep or help curb aggression better than six inches of height.

For the price the 125 is the better deal IMO. What is your stocking list? Maybe I missed it sorry if I did.

A 125 or 150 is a nice sized tank but it still doesn't mean you want to try and cram a dozen foot long or potentialy foot long cichlids into it. What are your plans? Nitrate levels...ie water quality and filtration is another consideration, twice a week 50% w/c's aren't too much fun for anybody.

Check Graigslist, you might find a heck of a deal. I usually buy acrylic tanks only off Craigslist. I just picked up a 4 year old 75 gallon acrylic for 80.00 in my area. If your not sure have someone go with you who knows what to llok for when buying used. If your set on buying new, I'd go with the 125 or if you can 180. I heard the same thing from my LFS the price jumps a lot from the 125 to the 150. Their excuse is the 150 is made by Oceanic. Anyway look forward to pics of your purchase!!

At times I wish my 220 was a 180. The 30" height is brutal. Its hard to clean and decorate. My fish never go up in the space above 24".

I would get the 150 over the 125 if the increase in price was reasonable. In your example, it seems a little excessive.

I was in the same shoes as you a while back. Debated between the 125 and 150. In the end I went with the 125 because I couldn't justify the much higher cost of the 150. The extra height wasn't worth it, for me anyway. The 180 is a much wiser move as some of the others above mentioned. You will be very happy with the extra width.

If you're considering a tank from Aqueon (AGA) look into the black silicone option. It will cost you a few dollars more but the tank looks a whole lot better with black silicone. Here are some pics of mine when I got it.

Agreed. The black silicone is a nice touch.
