I agree Leigh, get a little tank, 40 or 55, but before then learn about the nitrate cycle, then get some fish to put what you learned to work. little stuff, learn how to keep fish before you spend bucks on keeping fish and all thats involved.
I don't recommend anyone "new" to any hobby going out and buying anything to extreme. Especially if you are not sure what fish you even like yet. You never know it may not be your cup of tea.
You're right, I may have gone a little far. I do still think the same advice is best, but probably only up to a point of a 180, maybe a 220 gallon tank.
