Hi peeps.

My name is Armand and I am Currently keeping piranhas.

Although I have some good experience in Piranha keeping and Oscar fish keeping I know nothing about this Snakehead fish and I am beginning to feel interested on them. Thus thinking on getting some in the near future.

I am interested on the African Snakeheads mainly. What can you guys tell me about this fish regarding size of setup and feeding needs.

I also would like you to suggest me a very vicious Ssnakehead that doesn't grow beyond 18" preferably if there is any.

Any input will be appreciated.

I found this:

Species name: parachanna insignis

Common name: african snakehead

Maximum size: reports upto 2 foot - largest of african species

Origin: africa - Congo and Zaire;)

Temperament: aggresive , to other fish and to its own kind - juviniles noted to be highly canabalistic

Company: best kept in a species tank ,

Water parameters: Temperature tropical species 28 c pH avoid extreams, prefers slighly softer water

Identification: Coloration is distinct among African channids in that there are chevron-shaped bars across the middle of the back that extend up onto the dorsal fin; central area of sides contain 4-5 dark blotches that are distinct from each other; lateral line passes through these blotches. Dark stripe on side of head extending from posterior rim of orbit to upper part of operculum.

Any imput about someone who owns this channa?.

cobras will get way past 18" assuming its a marulius your talkng about.

My reccomendation is a Channa Aurantimaculata. Grows to a max of 16", occasionaly 18".

In my opinion, This snakehead is number 2 on the best looking snakeheads under Channa Barca.

I have a pair, male is at 10" and female at 11". Here are some pics:

most snakeheads are vicious but elegant predators.

Hi,

If you are interested mostly in the african parachanna, go for the obscura. Insignis are nearly impossible to find. IUts better with africana, but obscura are often found in LFS, and very cheap too.

They can be shy towards other fish, biut are cannobalistic as juvies (like a lot of other channa ,too).

All other mentioned Channa above are asian.

Cheers

As a matter of fact I don't know If they're illegal to keep in Mexico, never thought about it before....

I have seen all your picts your tank and fish are great mate.:headbang2

As far as iIhave seen my fave is the Aurantimaculata (although it's not african) and the Parachanna Obscura... I think those two are my options...

Cheers.
