What Snakehead would you suggest?.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think my main options are as follows:

1.-Parachanna Obscura.
2.-Channa Aurimaculata.
3.-Channa Lucius.

I love Channa Micropletes however I am pretty far from being able to house a monster fish about that size....

What about Channa Argus?, is it possible to get one of this devils?.

Spot on that Simon, I like Channa lucius

I have experience keeping a large (18") one with similar size predators like silver arowana and clown knives, with no problems. Unlike the Cobra I tried mixing in...that was a disaster...

How hot is it in Mexico?

Aurantimaculata are subtropical and you would need at least part of the year to be able to reduce the temp to below 20c. There are known health issues caused by this and I have personally found them to be much more active at cooler temps. Pleuro's would be a really good choice aswell as Obscura.

aurantis are expensive and subtropical.. the obscura is a good choice, looks good and able to com.

never kept lucius but why not..

channa argus grows about the same size as micropeltes.. maybe bigger and can be mean as hell..

the sh's that are easiest to com in my experience are marulioides (24"+) pleuro (16") dwarf spiecies.. but how much fun is that in a monster tank.. auranti (16")

Well that can be an issue to deal with, Mexico city has a warm not so hot weather most of the year, and my tanks can be without heater. My piranha are from 24 to 30 celcius most of the year without the need of a heater. I just need the heater about one month a year when the tank temp can drop up to near 21 celcius.

Thanks for the input.

I have all 3 of these (the obscuras are only juveniles yet) and i have to say go for the lucius. The auranti is the prettiest but would benefit from a bit colder temps atleast some periods. The obscura i have heard are often a bit shy as adult(hearsay only)
The lucius is active and curious, real fun to watch. It has become one of my fav channas
