Unless someone can provide some substantial evidence that snakes living in large, spacious enclosures live longer, healthier lives than snakes living in minimalistic tubs, I still stand by my previous statements.

I base my opinions on this matter by the actions of hobbyists who have been keeping/breeding snakes longer than some of you have been alive, and have great (not good, great) success doing what they do. These are people who have kept snakes in both caging styles and now use tubs and racks. There's reasons professionals like Brian Barczyk, Kathy Love, Bob Applegate, etc, use tubs over aquariums...and it ain't just because they're 'cheaper."

Glass tanks are more difficult to control humidity and heat, as both easily escape out of the screen-top. They are also harder to clean, because of their heavy weight and sharp corners inside. In addition, they're less secure and a snake is probably more likely to escape a glass tank than any other enclosure. And several big snake breeders like Bob Clark and Kevin McCurly from NERD agree that smaller, so-called "cramped" enclosures are better for snakes. 99% of the time, you put a snake in a huge enclosure, he's gonna spend 90% of his time curled up in a corner, or in a shelter.

Yes, indeed, these are the people I take advise from; these are the individuals who have decades of experience to back up their knowledge base, not pimple-faced highschoolers who work at Petsmart, keep one snake for 2 years, and think they know everything.

And I really hate it when people think they can read a snake's mind and tell if its "happy" or not. Give me a break.

LMAO!!! I totally work at petsmart!

xD

But thanks, Ophiuchus, you totally get the picture!

And just so ya know... I've had my babies for more than 2 years LOL.

  1. you guys are missing something and Im not sure why.I think your over thinking what we are trying to say.
  2. We all know, not just you 2,all of us know that a snake will live and prosper in a smaller cage whatever the type.
  3. We all know how professional breeders raise and breed their snakes.
  4. We all know or at least most of us know that glass is not the best to insulate snakes and recreate its temps and heat on a level basis. Not many ppl can afford the plastic specialized caging with all the bells and whistles.
  5. What we also know, and heres the kicker, when we go into the snake room at night and flip on the lights, every snake Ive had is roaming the entire cage.I love to watch it.My baby corn snake even did this in its 1000 gallon cage. All the snakes Ive had utilized every bit of space they were given.Yes some will just sit in a corner most the time but my cat sleeps in a chair all damn day,you would think he was dead but at night he gets up and makes some coffee and tweeks out all over the house.
  6. No,none of our snakes have ever spoken to us,even while on lsd but the simple fact to me is that weather its feeling warm and fuzzy in its heart or not,its using the space.Again,Im basing this on my personal though not a pro,but personal last 20 years of keeping diferent snakes.
  7. So Im not telling you to supersize your cages. Its up to you,but since Ive seen mine and other ppls roam all around and utilize the space then god damn if Im not going to give them as much as I can.
  8. Again,we know, that they will live breed and eat and crap in a tub. They will do the same in a large enclosure, plus they can roam around if they would like.I dont know anyone or anything that does something just because it had a brain fart.I think the snake sees a spot it wants to go to and it goes.
  9. If you think for a moment that somebody with a crap load of breeding racks dosnt feel now and then just one little pinch in their hearts that all those snakes could be in a nice big viv that replicates it environment then I think your not fully loaded. Some of us others have talked to breeders too.Its the same in the fish world.
  10. 116,dont take this wrong but I keep getting the Expert Master thing from you,not saying your not good and knowledgeable.I play guitar good enough to play full sets with many bands.Ive played all my life. However,by no means am I a pro, expert or master.I could fool you,but why try.You know that each year you learn more and more, just think what you will know 5 10 20 years from now.None of us hear are masters. Its not pleasurable the way you sometimes state things like its writen in stone by God himself. You got some great animals, and you are smart, but like me,not an expert.
  11. Im sorry if this all sounds crazy but dang.Snakes will live in a tub forever, you decide based on your heart and whatever the hell youve learned from this stupid thread what you will do with your snakes. My personal experience they use the space given, not every day,but as they please.Never have I had a snake call DR phill because its tank was too big.Whatever Im worth to this, hope I cleared up our side a bit.

116 is an "expert" in her own mind and ofcourse they work at Pet smart which lends "credibility" to her "expert" status.

"you guys are missing something and Im not sure why.I think your over thinking what we are trying to say"

If they want to justify keeping snake/s in small enclosures than so be it . I feel bad for their snake's.

You and I like others here who use roomy enclosures that snake's will use them ESP Corn's .

Well said. 116 is an "expert" in her own mind and ofcourse they work at Pet smart which lends "credibility" to her "expert" status
well,Im not trying to bash anyone.Im just speakin from the heart and I know 116 has knowledge. We just need to put ourselves in check now and then.Their are plenty of herps Ive not had and either have you guys.None of us are pros.I honestly think if I was to name someone close on here it would be Varanio with the big guys.Alot of us know alot of stuff but some is opinion and some is fact then some is wrong. We need to decide whats what and then state it that way.Tons of ppl come to this site for advice so we cant forget that our opinion could direct somebody to failure if we arent careful.
