what so you think is the most common monster fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would also agree plecos and aro's are most likely the most commonly kept monsters around the world

Yup have to agree, everyone who starts monster here gets a jardini and pleco :) If oscars where "monsters" id go with them too. Even umbee and dovii are becoming very common here and gaint gouris id actually vote this higher then jardini come to think of it.

I must say I do find most arows boring and not the prettiest fish, BUT asains are amazing, they just add color which passes them in my books shame we cant get them down here.

I kinda feel bad for oscars many casual fishkeepers seem to just want them for macho reasons. :< I guess that goes for any fish purchase though, folks need to research what they're getting into!

If you want to count oscars as monstes, I would include them with pacus.I think a lot of people may not think of pacu because they are mostly veggie eaters, but they definitely are tank busters!

Maybe we can make an attitude scale(0-10) to go along with size. Attitude plus size equals monster! Anything with a sum over 10 qualifies!

Pacu: Attitude 0 + Length in inches 10 = 10 qualifies!
Juvie Pbass: Attitude 3 + Length 7 = 10
Jag cichlid: Attitude 6 + Length 6 = 12

And so on. I bet we could argue all weekend long on what defines attitude (appetite, territorial, etc) and where each fish fall, and maybe even moster ratings for different levels (15, 20, Even a 25+ mega moster title, lol).

Really? I live in CT had to travel 2 hours to get my redtail. And another 30 minutes to get my shovel nose rtc hybrid I lived In central NJ for ever and never found any rtc

Go to Waterbury Aquarium, whenever i went there they almost always had baby redtails on hand. But to asnwer the question... i think im gonna go with the pacu on this one, it seems like every petstore i go to has a tank dedicated for the pacu's who were neglected after they grew too large for their 20 long.

Oscars, the entry level monster fish. Like a Mcdonalds hamburger, "over a billion sold"

Don't forget piranhas!!!! lol

Haha funny cause I have a channel cat, 2 pacus, 3 oscars, and a pleco. :p

well i think some of us could have forgotten about a very over looked fish, the iridescent shark. there're everywhere, every petco, petsmart, wall mart, LFS, etc, sells them for $4-$6. and the get huge. i read somewhere that they average 30". at least pacu and oscars are usually more expensive.
