What sp.?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right now no one is sure what it is. It was imported a few times back in the late 80's/early 90's but hasn't been formally described nor has been found again in the wild. Most consider it a synonym of facetus, but I don't think it is for two reasons. One it stays a much smaller adult size and two, it's body shape is much more elongated than facetus or your specimen. Coloration is very differant too, but coloration is not supposed to determine species at all appearantly.

But Camphilophus I think tracked some down, so I would yield to his word on it.

Well thanks for the help guys. I bought them as oblongums but was confused with the CRC not listing them as a valid sp.

I also think its Australoheros oblongum.

The "chanchito" group is really poorly described and best described by collection location. They vary greatly in appearance from place to place. A recent work split them into a bunch of different (really hard to tell apart) species. Many are still not formally described.

Felipe Cantera has a great breakdown of these fish by collection location on his website
(http://www.aqvaterra.com/map_australoheros.php)

I think that oblongum are actually from Argentina vs. Uruguay, though, so they're not on the map.
