What species of cat is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
 I want!... don't have the room for a goonch ( at least not willing to put it w/ my "big boys") but these guys are awesome! Share info! plz???!!!

Most stay fairly small. They're fairly rare in the hobby, I've only seen a handful come in over the past five years, and nearly all were sold as B. bagarius like Wednesday's was.

There are a buttload of different species in this genus. Check it out:

I see them discussed on PCF every now and then, mostly by high-level fish heads. Not my cup of tea anyway so I've not read their threads with much attention.

Ive housed both b. Yarelli and glyptothorax and id say go for b. Bagarius lol. Agreed some a very similiar to goonch species but y not just get the real thing hah...b yarelli are a bit hardier than these glyptothorax ime and pretty placid aswell.

Man yeah, that's one heck of a clone! Cool little fish, good find. :)

Kinda surprised those haven't made it into the hobby yet actually.

Awesome! though anything that says "Hillstream" gives me the twitch eye lol... must do some more research... wanting to fill up some of the "grow-outs" now that the big guys are all big lol w/out having to use the tanks and further grow-outs! >.< but don't wanna just keep typical community fish ect.. seems most the oddballs are monsters nowadays in the trade. everything gets big =/ BUt these guys could be an awesome alternative for those that want "goonch" but don't have the space for them.

That's precious :)) :))

What do they have in common other than some exterior commonalities? Bagarius are big toothy predators and these guys are kind of like small plecos? Are they grazers? They use the suction-cup mouth to hold on to rocks against strong currents but what's their mode of feeding?

Viktor,

They don't have sucker mouths (at least not all of them). Most of them have a sucker like apparatus on their belly right behind the gills. I'd imagine that with this genus being the most speciose type of catfish in Asia they fill all different niches in their range. I'd imagine they're more akin to small pims or synos in behavior and habitat range.
