I am going to have a planted tank for my gymnos and oblongums, i am wonder what is the cheapest and best suited for gymnos and plants? I don't want spend a lot. its for a 46 bow. I was thinking 40lbs of flourite on bottom and quartz sand on top. this is my first real planted tank.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the standard planted-tank substrates, like Flourite or Eco-Complete . . . my gymnos are in a planted tank with Eco-Complete and a top-layer of standard gravel

I'm personally a fan of this product - - http://www.aquariumplants.com/Freshwater_Aquarium_Plant_Substrate_p/ss.htm - - and with free shipping, it's very price competetive . . .

thats just soil master select or turface. i wouldnt wast my money on that when you should be able to find it local and a lot cheaper.

what kind of plants will you be adding?

i can get flourite for $20 for a 20lb bag.

I don't know, i could use suggestions.
there is going to be this stocking:
pair dimerus
3 gymno blue neons
12 seprea tetras

their going to have a cool down period so what every works, i don't want a heavily planted tanks.

do you have any experience with this product, or is that just conjecture? and if you say it's available "local and a lot cheaper", could you provide a suggestion of what to look for and how much to pay?

I tried the AquariumPlants.com product based on a recommendation from someone else on MFK, and the results have been outstanding . . . but if the same product can be found cheaper elsewhere, I'd sure like to know what it is . . . thanks!

some good novice choices for plants are:

- cryptocoryne (sold as green/red/bronze wendtii)
- sword plants (amazon, ozelot, red rubin, etc.)
- onion plants (callend crinums)
- java fern (typically not planted, but attached to driftwood or rocks)
- anubias (also typically attached to driftwood or rocks)

these are all pretty easy to keep and will allow you to get your feet wet as far as keeping a planted tank . . . in my experience, all of the above will work perfectly well with gymnos

i have lots experience with SMS. there are also countless threads with photos maybe not on mfk but other sites. its the same thing.

Lesco is the first place to look. 50 pound bag tends to run about $15.
its also sold some times under the name Oil-Dri. one person said they found it under another name at one of their local auto part shops i think it was auto zone.

No it's not low light, for now until I get the spare cash to buy new bulbs it will be running a t5 saltwater coral light so about 10,000k. Wait can you use oil dry for planted tanks. Is lesco an online place?
