What Substrate for senegal.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im looking to switch my tank over to sand after last night.. my senegal was choking on a pebble for over an hour and finally got it out. What would be my steps to switch to sand?

How you change is really up to you the hard way is to drain the tank then remove the gravel with a scoop of some kind then refilling the tank.
easier way is to scoop out the gravel then using well washed sand genlty lower the filled scooper to the bottom and dump it gently repeat till finished-Anne

Thanks everyone i guess ille havta set up a tank just for them. Anyone got any ideas on the idea of what size tank to try to breed them in? Would a 5x2x2 be a good size or do you think smaller is better? And does anyone know if dithers like guppies or platys or any other tankmates would be a good idea and make them more comfortable or work the opposite way and make them not interested breeding? Has any MFK members bred senegals before? I know there is a guy here in Aus who has done it but he wouldnt give me any tips which i guess i understand considering he was selling babies for $150 each and that is cheap when you will normally pay around 250-300 for a small one.

didn't you get a PM?

Sorry for some reason it doesnt tell me when i get one and i rarely get PMs so i dont ever look to see. Thanks heaps thats alot of good information. Alot better then i got from the guy breeding them here. Still doesnt say what size tank but im guessing a semi planted 5x2 will be big enough but still cosy enough for senegals to be happy.

is there a proper method for washing sand, so there wont be any residue from the sand when i put it in?

yeah you have to wash the sand good. mandatory. if i were you i would move out all my fish and do a 100% change. keep the filter running if you could so that the beneficial bacteria doesnt die out.

if you just scoop out the gravel with the water still in the tank i can almost guarantee that youre gonna have some nasty looking water. tehn when you add the sand all the crap is gonna be on the surface of the sand. might as well start fresh.

even better you could keep the gravel that you have and make sure the bacteria stays alive until you put the sand in teh tank. then you can use that gravel to and the filter as your benefiacial bacteria

what kind of fish do you have anyways

i currently have 2 senegals, keyhole cichlid and small catfish species. i wouldnt be taking all of the gravel out, id only be taking out the max half..and im not worried about debris since i clean it thoroughly every few days and ill double check the area that ill be switching out before hand.

Washing sand is the same as gravel rinse rinse rinse rinse and rinse agian till the runoff is clear-Anne
