I think it’s only illegal to release aquarium fish if they not native and have been in a tank with non native species for under 30 days. That’s what it is here I think anyway

Each state is different. It's best to look up what your fish and wildlife rules are for keeping (and releasing) native fish rather than guess. You state must be very lenient because it only takes hours or even minutes to infect a native fish with aquarium strain infections/parasites.
