Okay, so I'm starting out with a 90 and other than the bitty clown loaches I'm pretty well stocked. I have a jack Dempsey, a green texas, six silver dollars, and five clown loaches. I realize the loaches are going to outgrow this and I haven't decided if I am going to keep them long-term yet. How big of a tank would I want for the five clowns if I wanted a cichlid community in the upper levels if I decide to keep them long-term. Note that I don't have any plans to add any more fish to the 90, I mostly just want to let my fish grow out.

Your clown loaches will be fine in that tank for a very long time...they are VERY slow growers...I think your stock is fine as long as you have adequate filtration

I would say that's an alright sized tank. The loaches are not the major concern as stated before there slow growers. With proper filtration and water changes you should be okay. Of course bigger is always better. Even if you just found a 125. Something that is 6' would be ideal!

So the loaches would be ok in a 125 once they're full grown? Thanks for letting me know things are good for now ^^

A clown loach will never physically out grow a 90g tank in the way an aro or Rtc will, however, they are very active fish that need a good length tank with plenty of flowif they are to reach their full potential. A 4' long tank may look plenty big enough for a 4" cl, but IME that is about when you want to move them into something at least 6' long if you want to keep them healthy and growing. I've witnessed clowns stop growing around 6" and slowly fade to a premature death after being kept in a 75g tank over 8-10 years.

I've actually found them to be steady growers up to about 6" if housed and fed properly. They do slow down from there, but don't underestimate the amount of swimming space they need to thrive.

Thank you for letting me know when I will have to look at upgrading. What size do you think would make a good permanent home? Anything 6' long or specifically so many gallons?

I would recommend getting 3-5 more loaches and house them all in a 180g tank.

Why 3-5 more? I thought that five would be a nice shoal but do I need more? I'm somewhat new to big fish and clown loaches so I'm not confident I'm doing things right.

5 is a perfect number in my opinion. Find a 6' tank bigger is always better! If you find a good deal grab it but 125-180 would be a great tank for these fish! 2 nice caves on either end of the tank one for your Texas one for your jack. Some driftwood in the middle or some sort of foliage for your loaches and your fish will be happy
