Festae is what most folks are talking about, but quite often Mayans are sold under the same "red terror" name.

Fine fish, but not a true Festae.

By the spot on the caudal peduncle, from what I've seen.

A Mayan cichlid will have a large spot that is mostly centered in the middle of the caudal peduncle. Festae will have a smaller spot in the upper portion of the caudal peduncle (above the lateral line). Check out Figure B at this link: http://www.oscarfish.com/fish/81-all-about-fish/610-red-terror-midas-cichlid.html

All the local LFS I've seen mix both species and call them Red Terror, so I wouldn't trust common name labels at fish stores.

there is no difference between true red terror and red terror when asking to purchase them. the Majority of vendors or distributors refer to Mayans as red terrors. and then those are sold by LFS as red terros. now there is a difference between festae and red terrors:) there are plenty of pictures on this site and the web to compare them to each other. but if you want festae you will need to refer to them as festae when looking to buy and not red terrors:) good luck
