If you look at the vent in the second photo it's obviously female. But at a glance I would have said male as well.

i've never really known much venting fish. it just didn't look like any female that i've seen before and it had male characteristics so i just assumed it was a male. also i've never seen a female that big before

Shark Aquarium in north NJ had a bunch of wild caught dovii and still might, some of the big ones were hard to tell, and thats coming from an expert(George), who had some very impressive females
