what the heck is this?

i saw my cat following something on the carpet.
so i went to look,it was one of these crawling along.
threw him away.
next day i find one in my feeder tank.
its like an ant when he sticks his head out.
but if ya look close at him,you can see his body is like an eel inside
and half as long as his shell thing and swimming inside.
thats his head sticking out of one end.
does it turn into something or get bigger?

i found the one in the pic in a 10 gallon with feeder fish.
cant be the same one i flushed one

It's a caddis fly larvae. Harmless (hence the protective shell it makes for itself). Weird looking but a tasty fish snack.

hey oddball i googled that but didnt learn much.
i found one in my 55 gallon now.
are they coming from my lfs or is a fly laying eggs?
what do they look like grown up?
