what the heck is wrong with my canister filter??? Help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Never, under any circumstances rinse anything that has been in and is to be put back into the canister filter with tap water. The chlorine will undoubtedly kill the bacteria and youll have spikes. Rinse everything in tank water. I fill a 5 gallon bucket halfway and clean the sponges as well as biomedia in tank water. I do mine more regularly than most, exactly two weeks from my last water change, i just shake and clean off the gunk. Only change the carbon on a monthly basis, its pretty much saturated after that unless you use more than necessary. Only change the sponges and biomedia as they begin tofall apart. Doing this will help to eliminate some pathogens and keep an overall clener tank with healthier fish while preserving as much bacteria as possible. The two week waiting period is intended to allow the bacteria in the gravel or sand bed some time to recolonize. Because you do lose some while cleaning sponges and doing waterchanges.

what can i take out and wash and put back in, and what do I need to to replace completely?? Your info is excellent but I can't absorb all the info at once.

Everything washed and put back. The bio needs to be rinsed in tank water as well as the coarse sponge/ceramic rings(pipe looking media). Only the fine/polishing pad needs replacing.

Nobody said anything about soap...

no? around here, to wash means to use soap. I don't know anyone who washes their hands, laundry, dishes, car, dogs, floors, counters, etc without soap. even the news:duh: says you should wash, not rinse your fruits and vegetables "because simple rinsing won't remove the pesticide residue". many people simply assume they use it to wash everything else, you must use it to clean the germy yucky fish stuff too.
add that to the fact I've had people thank me because they were going to use soap, and that I've seen people use soap to wash their filters and tanks with horrible results, I figured it bore repeating.

Well around here they teach the concept of context. When people here say they are going to fill their tank up I don't tell them to use an ethanol treatment for their gas. And when someone needs to vacuum their tank I don't suggest a dyson. Just saying...

To the OP, the model number should be located on a label on the pump head (the top portion of the filter).

If you can't locate the model number and you would like the filter instructions, let us know whether the filter is round or square and measure the height of the filter. Or post a picture of the filter to help us to help you better.
