The brownish SHEEPSHEAD that was posted a couple above me is the atlantic species.
The fish in question is a pacific saltwater species often caught on party boats off socal and in baja on cut squid, live bait, and muscle or shrimp. They enjoy schooling in kelp beds and muscle infested rocky areas.
All sheephead begin life pink in color like in the picture which is there female form(that is a huge female). Once sexually mature One female will grow a large bump in there head and one black stripe down there body thus changing to a male. There is generally one male for every 10 females in a 100-300 yard radius.
When fishing on the boat i work on (i am a deck hand on the "Freelance" out of newport beach) If we catch a small male we know not to fish there anymore as that he is the only male and there will not be anymore around there bigger than him.
I spear these fish quite often and they can be quite smart when you can find the male of the area. Very interesting fish.
