Hi guys,
Thought one of you may be able to help me out in my quest. . . .

I have a fish store near me (im in northern Japan) that specializes in monster fish.
Yesterday I was browsing there and they had the most amazing looking snakehead there.

It was about 12" in length, pretty thick (compared in thickness to the can of redbull I was holding) All black, with a very slight blue tint to it.
The pelvic fins were black and white striped.

When I asked about this, they told me it is called a "Burmese Tiger Snakehead". And that it is a new "unknown" species. They guessed that max size could be 40cm.

I have searched everywhere for info on this fish, and can't find anything.
Anyone know of this species?

Next time I am ther I will try and get a photo.

Cheers!

Buy that fish and ship it to me. Lol!

Get a clear pics of that fish if the owner allows you to. I want to see this type of snakhead. :)

It could be:
channa pulchra or channa ornatippinis as their max size is still unknown yet and they probably caught a big one. Not sure though, Brucki and tropheus will probably soon jump in.

agreed , dont think for the discription we are looking at a pulchra or ornatipinis , its the black and white striped fins thats getting me , i would of maybe said melasoma ,

only things i can think of with black body and the typical striped fins is

possably a dark lucia
gachua sp jet black - this would not get redbull thikness though

i am thinking from the discription it probably was a new species , there are quite a lot around at the moment , another three species where discovered just last week.

as you are in japan are you not anywhere near aquashop bonito , that place would be top of my list if i lived in japan , but then i would be even more skint. they even have diplos in stock

Thanks for the help guys.

I have looked through the aqua bonito site, and have found the "Burmese Tiger Snakehead".

The only thing is, the one in my local looks a lot more chunky than the one in this photo, has the exact same markings, but is very very black.

Can anyone shed any more light on this SH? Latin name? max size? temperment etc?

Cheers. (looks like I might have to pick this beuty up in a few weeks when I go back there)

Here is the pic from aqua bonito:
