hi
its channa pulchra.ive kept two groups of pulchra in different conditions and one group went quite dark and the other stayed a lightish green colour.
cheers

any pictures?

Thor is quite correct in his statement in the colour differences.
When kept on Sand Pulchra change colour to suit the envioment...

The fish in the pic below is the same fish in the pics above (note the 2 spots on the dorsal fin),it had to be removed when a pair formed in the group.

Understood that pulchra's get darker depending on the environment, but the one he pictured is black, and supposedly juvenile at 12 inches.

well a dark blue grey fish in a dimly lit tank has its picture taken Sneakily (with out flash) on a phone camera its gonna appear much darker than it really is.

How can the owner "know" its a juvenile when he dosen't even know what species it is?

I still think its an Adult C.Pulchra.

hmm very interesting, change colors according to the enviroment like gars, bichirs

one thing is for certian , it is not a juvinile fish , it is an adult , and is most likely pulchra or mimic pulchra , its not ornatipinis as it has not got the correct number of stripes in the pectrol fins . both pulchra and mimic pulchra are capable of showing that dark in a tank with dark/black gravel and background also showing stress colours due to no surface cover .

a clearer pic would be needed to be 100% but i strongly belive it is pulchra or mimic pulchra

cheers col

Hmm, makes sense. I've heard that they also have a variant of bleheri in Germany being labeled as Channa sp. aff. bleheri "Blue" that has a bigger head and gets up to 12 inches.
