What the Hell is THIS?>

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would drop the last baffle myself to make it a wet dry. The plant in there looks plastic, probably just there to show what you can do with the space. I wouldn't add more bio-balls after the box, the refugium will take care of many more problems then the added bio-ball, or even pot scrubbers.

i see. i understand. bio-balls work the same as pot scrubbers ? And how do they work really. ? sorry im kinda new to this stuff. Im trying to build my sump , just havent figured the skimatics.

allot of people wil tell u nylon pot scrubers work better than bio balls and there cheaper
i myself do not know

as the others said i is a refugium and it is a "natural" way of removing Nitrates and other organics like Phosphates. if you have spare money then it aint a bad idea. but personally and the view of where i work, you would be better off buying Good quality live rock and partial water changes. as long as ya got good quality live rock, lots of flow and plenty of regular water changes using good quality salt (reef crystals or tropic marin pro reef) then there isn't much need for a refugium.

does anyone have like layouts ? pics of like water flow in a sump.DIY sumps . Sorry guys im just perplexed by all this.:nilly:

WOOOT to all you guys for helping.

A refugium is very good for a freshwater tank. They are also quite useful in sw.

Pot scrubbers are about 3 times as much surface area as bio balls. I use one of two bio-medias now. Ehfisubstrat pro, and pot scrubbers.

it is mainly for saltwater and maybe brackish i believe. however it does great for fw too...

I have seen a lot of arowana tanks in Olympia that use refugiums. A friend has 3 24+" silvers and one 26" black, each has its own 210 gallon aquarium, and that is a lot of water to change. The refugium helps that quite a bit, although a drip system would be better.

My favorite way of removing water changes, PURIGEN. It has been 3 weeks and I have not had to change water because nitrate is undectable.

Just be wary of using purigen. If you do not have two seperate bags of it, when you go to recharge the purigen you can start a cycle. The purigen will choke the bb as it is removing the nitrogen, inluding ammonia and nitrite. Your bb count won't be high enough to keep your tank fully cycled, and when you remove the purigen, youmay see a slight jump in ammonia.
