he has a broken back sorry bro but my recomendation is to put him in a bag and put him in the freazer. (considered the most humain way to put fish to sleep)
That's a crying shame. You can also instantly euthanize fish by submerging them in rubbing alcohol.

If it's back is broken then before euthing it try to gently straighten it by pulling out on both ends and pressing down with your thumbs until it straightens but no further, it will either kill it or straighten it out. If the spinal cord is not cut it might work, this is a gar with partly cartiliginous vertabrae. If you are going to freeze or smack it in the head with a hammer then you lose nothing in the attempt. Gar don't bend up and down very much and I can picture it getting center punched from below by the wolf.
I have never seen this with a fish except a california barracuda that was smacked across a gunwhale of a boat, in that case it did not matter because it got smacked on the head a few seconds later and used for bait.
I did have an alligator lizard that had it's back broken in the other direction by a cat. after straightening it lived another year before getting eaten by a snake.
