why do my oscars and convict cichlids fight when i put them together?

How big is the tank?
Is the tank heavily decorated?
What other fish do you have?
How big are all your fish?

It is in their nature to do that. Both cichlids will stake their claim of territories. I would not be surprised if they take a lot of damage in the process.

i disagree with that. Convicts are the meanest fish i own and have no problem going after jags and buttikoferi 10x their size.
plus they are fast and remarkably squirly little buggers.
My only glass banger is a ~3" female marble convict whether she has eggs/fry or not.
