What time is it "Lights Out" in your house?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have tank lights on all of my tanks but I rarely turn them on.

I use a timer (an highly recommend them) 10am to @ 8pm.

Truth be told how ever, there really is not much need for lighting in a fish only tank. the lights are to benefit us and most fish would perfer subdued lighting or and would get enough light from ambient sources around the tank. There are some exceptions to this.

The way I look at is that, if i have to deal with buying food and water changes they have to deal with my lights.

Two tanks on a timer; 9:45am-1pm Lights on, 1pm-4pm lights off, 4pm-11pm Lights on.
All off by 11pm.

Another tank 9am-11pm, with a new timer i haven't messed with, yet. This is also my only tank with plants.

Mine come on when I get home around 7:45-8a.m. and go off when I go to bed around 12-2p.m. the room has a decent amount of natural light.

What I don't get is why some people turn them on in the morning. If my water is clear and I can see my fish, then what is the point? Just curious, that's all.

Yes , are you serious ? The fish actually prefer the lights off. Leaving them on causes algal blooms and fish stress. not to mention an increase in power usage and the bulbs and ballasts wear out quicker. :) get a 3 dollar brinks timer. Even turning them off for 6 hours will greatly extend the service life of your lighting and give your fish some time to relax.

I do it because its a showcase, all three tanks in the living room lol :)plus I feed first thing in the morning and its good for me to have the lights on for that
