What to Breed for Income?

Always a demand for pet store quality then there are the hobbiest's fish
making a profit
ugh-no not in my case but i'm not very good with money
given that working one extra day without running around, shipping being otherwise aggravated pays me more, it's hard to justify doing it
on the other hand, the folks that have done this for years and have established their reputations can make a living at it but you are talking mass production and a specialized market
to breed and make money
chiclids for sure, my rottkiels paid for themselves
angels if high enough quality and can ship reliably and have someone to take your lesser grade stuff
hoplarchus psitticus,
electric blue dempsies (remember the various strains tend to get inbred so the more doing them the better)
some stuff would be more a science experiment, for instance could i house blue arrows in the house for winter then toss them in an outdoor pond for summer?
 
I do not think you will find a fish to breed that will pay for it's self when you factor in all cost plus a profit. I would breed homo sapien sapien, the world is over populated with them, but people will pay top dollar for littles to grow out... start up is high, but I have seen people make great money...

Bad idea, unless he is experienced with plecos, and $5000 isn't going to quite cover the costs of getting a full breeding group together that could even touch $1500 a month.

This is a very true statement. That is why you should look to inverts, as they can be run as support in your tanks for keeping the tanks clean, and as a bonus, you can make $50-100 a month off of the excess, or more depending on the species.

Bristlenose plecos are big demand right now, especially with planted tank keepers.

I can't find medium to large angelfish locally, so if you can growout to that size, you have a niche. They sell out before I can get down there, every darn time.
 
Zebra plecos arent really all that good. For a brief moment, but believe they only breed for few months out of the whole year, and they have really small broods of babies.

Yes they have small broods, but the temp of the tank water stays the same, as with any other circumstances. So pairs of Zebra Plec's can breed year round. Ive heard of a report of 5-6 broods a year if given excellent care.
