What to breed in 29 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Angels are a bad choice from what I've read. They get pretty big and can be difficult to breed due to having been in captivity for so many generations. Rams it'd be best to do just one pair, they pair off for breeding. They will like most cichlids **** up pretty much anything they see while spawning and raising the fry. That includes other Rams. I hate to say the C-word but Convicts are another option.

Australoheros sp. "Red Ceibal". They are very prolific and stay at a small size. Gorgeous fish! Readily available as well.

Pea puffers! They don't sell for a whole lot but they're always a hit. Try to find a mature pair so you don't have to wait a few months before collecting eggs. They just scatter eggs into a grassy substrate all the live long day. Then you get clever about using turkey basters, small siphons or whatever you want to get the eggs out and hatch the fry in a few small breeder tanks. I'm on my first pair right now and they are almost mature. Got grass growing and everything. It's going to be awesome! I mean, they're puffers! Pure freshwater miniature puffers! A perfect alternative to a betta in a 5g to 10g planted tank in your average office or home. Just gotta get worms established in the sand for them to pick at and a little snail bucket-culture on the side, but those are both easy.

Then there's the the not-often-seen mouthbrooding bettas, betta simplex. Easy to order online and relatively productive.

Bristlenose plecos are also easy and sell well.

Yeah I thought about dwarf puffers but I thought they'd be too hard to raise the babies, plus I would not make much off the babies.

Do rams need acidic/soft water?

No harder than anything else afaik. It's just their market strength that lures me. They arrive at the LFS and are all gone in a week more or less. My LFS still has rams sitting around from months ago. But that's here in Everett. Every area is different.

Yeah, rams do best in softer water.
