What to breed in a 55 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think I'm going to go with some lake tanganyika shell dwellers, but if people want to chime in with more info/ideas it is more then welcome.

Shortbodied Flowerhorns could work in a 55. Or breed some small uncommon cichlids.

http://www.malawicichlids.com/mw01011.htm Technically African Rift Lake Cichlids are not brackish, The 3 most well known lakes (Malawi, Tanganyika & Victoria) are not classed as 'brackish'. The term 'Brackish water' comes from sea water mixing with fresh water producing a level of salinity between the two. The 3 main rift lakes where majority of african cichlids come from have been separate from the sea for millions of years, so no mixing occurs even though the salinity of the lakes do come within the boundaries of 'Brackish water'

I've had great luck with south american cichlids! In my opinion they are the easiest to breed! The parents raise the clutch and protect the fry so you don't have to seperate the fry from the parents... EVER. Another plus is that most pet stores have their ph at neutral or 7.0. The south american cichlids colors really come out at a 6.2 ph so when you bring these beautiful fish to the pet store to sell they are usually amazed how colorful they are. Jewel cichlids are great! They are red with blue dots and their fins are outlined in hot pink! very colorful and not too big! they sell great at the pet store!
