Hi,
I have a question about jack dempseys
Before I bought mine I researched them and found them to be quite aggressive. I never would have imagined that it would end up killing my beautiful beloved 8" tiger Oscar! The JD is about 10 " long and they were both in a 75 gallon tank with various caves for hiding in. I don't know what to do now? Should I take a chance on adding anything else to the tank or will the JD kill it to? And what would make the JD kill the oscar I never would have imagined it would be so aggressive I read they did well with oscars.??????:(

I took mine back. He tried to kill my RTC. Not to mention destroyed my whole tank. When I took him back they stuck him in a tank full of oscars so maybe thats what he needs.

Get something meaner or slightly more aggressive. Make sure size is close to each other too.

Rearrange all of the tank when adding the new fish. Plan on keeping you're eyes on them to be sure they aren't tearing each other apart. One new fish might not work but the next one may. Its always, always a gamble.

well oscars IMO are wimps and for a 10inch JD he probaly didnt want to share his tank with your Oscar...but i would still keep him....let him have the 75g to himself...maybe put in a breeding pair of convicts but make sure the convicts are already 4inches....and through in some giant danios or rainbow fish.... maybe a large catfish....I would love to have a 10inch JD...good luck..

also, having a 10inch JD is a great fish to set a tank around....thats my point...GL

Yep, another cichlid might be dicey in there, because anything big enough to stand up to the JD might end up crowding your 75. I'm thinking things like texas. The con/con pair idea might work, or jewels. Otherwise schooling fish, medium cat(s) like synodontis, maybe a bichir...

yea at that size of the fish i would be surprised if you could fit anything in there without it being killed. And for the oscars, they arent VERY aggressive and will not live up to the standards of a JD and i have never successfully kept the pair.

Thanks everyone.
Maybe I'll add a Large Jaguar Cichlid it should be able to hold its own against a JD. :)

a large jag and a large jd is to large for a 75 gallon tank. besides if you put those 2 fish in that tank space the jag would most likely kill the jd so he can have the tank to himself.
