I'm just curoius. What is the best way to prepare incase theres a blackout for hours? Do any of you usually have something prepared for a disaster like this besides having a power generator? Thanks.

Well, when we had a ice storm during the winter, the power was off for awhile, I used a battery operated airstone and wrapped my tank with blankets, to try to keep the heat in it. But thats all I could do. I also have a generator, but my parents wouldn't let me leave it running in my room (where my tanks are), being so loud lol. I guess if it's hot outside and you lose power, you can use ice? to keep the tank cool, since you won't have any cool air on in the house

A reliable generator and extension cord are standard issues if you are a serious fish keeper. The extra gas for the generator would be helpful too. If you are on a budget, at least a battery operated air pump should be available at all times. Good Luck!

I have 2 rechargeable air pumps for my 2 tanks. It automatically switches to battery if the power goes out. ,don't have problem with temperature since i live in a tropical country.

for my other tanks i have battery powered airpumps. if power goes out at night i usually wake up to use the battery pumps :D

i had a blackout during the winter here in baltimore. the house was freezing and i definitely recommend blankets to keep the tank warm if you live in a cold area. Like stated above battery powered air pumps are a must and don't feed during the outage because the fish will produce waste which will in turn create ammonia.

is it wrong that my son and wife were freezing in the house but i was more concerned about my tanks getting cold? LOL.

I lost power in an ice storm for 5 days generator and extension cords are the only way I would have lost everything house temp was below 50 degrees. I got 4 tanks that generator didn't get turned off for 5 days straight

I heard you could pour a bucket of water in every 30mins if you don't have one of those air pumps with batteries o.o

Always get battery-operated airpumps no matter if your area gets power outages frequently or not. Generators are also great to have but not everyone can afford them unfortunately. Cover the tanks in blankets to help keep the temperature from lowering quickly.
