Well... if you got a son or daughter... you can always hook up one of those ol' hand-operated water pumps and hook that up into your sump.

MAKE THEM PAY THEIR DUES OF CHILDREARING! Yep, yep... that what I will do if I got a pond or a big tank and children. Although... I wonder if that would fall under the child labour laws or not...

I'd say get the generator and keep the filters running. I hate to lose all the biofiltration that could die in 6 hours.

Generator for sure. If you can't buy one, rent one for a day. I bought a 1000watt Honda a couple years ago for just this reason. Runs the filters, lights, heaters, etc. The entire tank(s) and a couple house lamps as well. Best money I ever spent.
Runs about 4-4 1/2 hrs. on a tank of gas.

would a battery power air pump support a 100 gal with around 30 fish inside?

buy 3 batt. operated pumps,or buy a portable tire inflator and fire it up once every 2 hours I guess...I've done this before during a typhoon and batteries are no where to be found..

This is what I have done before. Do massive water changes during the power outtage. New water will bring in some oxygen into the tank. Also, I had some smaller tanks, and I cut a hole in some water bottles and let water drip, dunno if it helped, but I didn't lose any fish. I lost power for about a month (bad times).

the large foam filters.. Hydro 5's.. the box says that a single hydro 5 is enough filtration for a 100 gal tank.. i keep a minimum of 2 in each of my tanks that are over 100 gals. and 2 of the hydro 3's in my 45 gal and 1 hydro 5 in the 29, and the 50 gal, and 2 in the 55 gal. (they are the only filters in that tank).

in a pinch you can put the foam filters on battery powered pumps or you can put the air pumps on a UPS from your local computer store, or several UPS's as the case may be...

even if you use a bat air pump you filter bacteria will be long dead after 6hrs it will be like cycleing your tank again

generators are good if you know when the power is going out

if you want something to cover you with power outs even when you are out it a UPS you need
