I would go for a bigger tank too. If you were wanting a nice large community tank i would watch the classified ads (like craigs list) for used tanks, a nice six footer is beautiful for mixed malawi tanks.
For my fry production i have a 33 gallon breeder, 29 gallon and a ten gallon. When a female is holding i put her in the empty ten by herself (i keep a couple fry in it so it wont lose its cycle then remove them when i put the mama in ) . I let her spit in the ten, take her out and put her back in main tank, let the fry stay and grow for a bit in the ten, then move them to one of the bigger tanks, i have to keep moving the bigger fish out into a "big kid" tank so they dont eat the smaller newer fry.
I mentioned this cause with the older fry in there, even if the lab spits them , they will most likely be eaten . Wasnt sure if you were wanting to keep them safe or not.
