what to do w/ extra tanks and equipment?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ I have never had a wet/dry before so if i get something wrong please be kind enough to share the info instead of leaving dumbass comments.

what if i used this DIY W/D strictly for bio filtration. skip the pads and load with bioballs. I would place the overflow intake around 4" from the main tanks surface so as not to collect any water with debris. could this work? again, sorry for the quick hack job on paint.

If you have a main tank that is not drilled, use an overflow box that comes with a sponge filter for your mechanical filtration. Then all you have to do for your wet/dry is add a submersible pump to the bottom of the hex tank, then fill it with scrubbies. You can either make a drip tray using the new plastic peg board or my ghetto way is to just use a coil of hose with a bunch of holes drilled in it. I used plastic ties to secure the hose in an evenly spaced coil.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Btw, you can either add an air stone to the middle of the media for superior aeration, or by adding a lid to encourage anaerobic activity you can have it also act as a denitrator. There is some research going on in Japan using wet/dry's and taller shapes lend well as denitrators. It looks like you may have a winner.

I think the first drawing would be more usefull and less of a hassle to maintain.
The seperated area for the pump would make monthly impeller cleanings easier, and bio media really needs very good mechanical filtration before it.
You'd need 2-5" max for space for filter pads/floss, so you wouldn't be losing much space to it.

Phoenixx, I am serious. I like that drawing. That is a hard tank design to make a successful wet/dry. I was complimenting you on that idea. Looks to me like you do have experience. Thats is why I said "master of DIY". I am sorry you took my comment the wrong way. I am all for that idea.
:clap
