i have rats and they are phenomenal pets. i've heard them accurately likened to tiny dogs on many occasions, as you can teach them tricks, litterbox train them to some extent, they beg for food, know their names/come when you call them, etc (as long as you take the time to train them, of course). they do best in same-sex groups of 2 or more, as they are very social animals, and you'd need to keep them in a wire cage as tanks will trap the heavy ammonia and damage their lungs, but they are wonderful, i love the girls that i have.
Rats, huh not a bad idea. Plus their not tiny unlike mice/hamsters.

Remember, try and get something that doesnt smell. small room + stinky poopoo rats = No Va J J.

edit/ I've had many rats. they make great pets. Try a chinchilla. They dont smell horrible, you can hold them, and the ladies are more inclined to like them.
..........I can't believe you just said the first part..........actually I can.:D:ROFL:
I've know about the clean room thing, ex-gf's would get pissed if my room smelled of fish, lol. Where do I get a chinchilla though, their $150 at Petsmart, I'm not paying that much for a fluff ball, lol.

chinchillas are freakin sweet, girls love em', and they're soft as hell. pretty easy to keep clean too.
We have some at Petsmart, their pretty cool. Their always jumping and sitting on top of water bottles.

:) rats are not as stinky as you'd think; you can smell them, but i've had hamsters and countless other small rodents, and they smell more of sweet than like pee. i use fleece blankets instead of bedding, so every other day or so i shake the poops that missed the litter box out, vacuum them all up, and change the bedding, and it's instant fresh air. :)
Nice idea on the blankets!

How big of a tank? Ball pythons can be tamed easily and fit in a 40 gal breeder tank for life. Bearded dragons can almost be like dogs but they need a bit more room then the ball pythons. Lepord geckos are also great and can do fine in a 20 gal long aquarium. None of these animals have a bad smell.
Nice ideas. A snake is just to weird for me, but thanks. My bro had a leopard geck once, it was pretty cool. I've wanted a bearded dragon before, but they do get big.

I wouldn't want the tank to be longer than 4 feet tops would really be the only thing I am worrying about.

Not sure what I will do, you all have provided me with more than I expected. I'll just have to see what tank requirments are and etc.

Thanks guys, I was about ready to go to bed and saw that 7 people posted in 20 minutes! :)

Leopard geckos are pretty personable.
Good "girlfriend reptile" too.
They take well to handling and and have cute faces.
:D

you know what i just realized would be pretty sick? a desert enclosure for chillas like they have at the zoo.. throw in some lunar lights and that'd be so entertaining.. i'm sure thats not what youre looking for, but they'd do great in a homemade enclosure too.

the cool thing is that they need some decent space, but they love ledges so you could keep the floorspace pretty small and make it taller. i don't own one anymore, but used to have one, and he was one of the coolest and most personable animals i've had. my enclosure was about 2.5 feet long by 1.5 feet wide by 2.5-3 feet high at most, and that was more than enough space for Rocky.

pretty freekin smart for a varmint:

I think we have a winner, them vids were SWEET! The one we have at our Petsmart loves to sit on top of the water bottle, it barely fits but he loves it to no end just chilling up there. I just need to find a place to get one, at Petsmart their 150 even with my discount that would be quite a bit just for the animal alone. But if that's the price I will pay.

I dont know guys, I like reptiles and all, I've had my fare share, but he's looking for something personable, that he can handle and "do something with". I'm sorry to say....but....reptiles are boring..
 I knew alot of people would suggest a reptile, which I was sure I was probaly going to go that way.Which is totally fine, reptiles are cool. Never even thought of a fluff ball (chinchilla)though, hey that's a good name actually, lol.

Again thanks, I going to get a chinchilla, I think I'll make the enclosure for it, it might be easier that way, but I have to work at 7am, and is 2 am now, so night everyone, lol. The chinchilla talk can wait for now.:)

Search around. There are breeders and stores that are cheaper then Petsfart. Probably healthier too. I know when I was manager, the chinch's we'd get in were horrible.

Get a blue tongue skink;) They are diurnal, livebearing, omnivorus, live a long time and normaly very placid and calm lizards. Of corse make ALOT of reserch first

I was looking around and there is 3 breeders in Ohio.(chinchilla) I can get a baby that is like 2 months old for $125. That's the cheapest, which is totally fine with me.

I'm going to research this up a bit more though.

Thnx all!

what about a bearded dragon. I have one and she hangs out on my shoulder all day. they don't need a huge tank, are easy to care for and they are very personable (yes it is a word)

I've kept rats as pets on and off for 40 yrs, I love em'. I don't agree with whoever said they stink-mine never stank at all. You have to change their bedding out once a week like any other caged animal. Even my male rats didn't stink. Real tameable and sweet. Whereas hamsters and mice will bite, I've never had a rat bite while getting him used to handling. Not saying they won't, I've just never had it happen. You can just hold them and carry them around, sit with them while you watch TV, whatever. Great pets.
