what to do when power goes out?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
:iagree: Well. because we've been there. The snow falls, or the rain, the temps drop and there's not much you can do about keeping your Tropical Fish alive besides heating them! After losing enough fish we got a, well, Rallysman explains it well. :thumbsup:

actually, after doing some math it would probably be cheaper to get a generator to run the equipment for any amount of time. a UPS is great for short term, but long term would be expensive to get one large enough to do any good

where i live they run all utilities underground. power outages are very rare, usually caused when its 115 degrees outside and there is an overload. when this happens im more worried about the tank getting too hot, and myself...

Scott, you can also place jugs of frozen water in your tank to keep the temp. down

I now have a backup genarator. We did 5 days without power due to an ice storm. I used candles under the tanks for heat. I was cleaning soot off of the tank bottoms for months. It was worth it.

Invest in a gas-powered generator... I did! Well worth the money, if you value your fish/tanks/collection? :) It feels really good to know that YOU got things overed, if ever another situation like that (power outtage, blackout, etc.) were to happen?!! Trust Me?!! :grinyes:

I lost power at my old house several times, and the gas powered generator worked great! I had 1500 watts of light, several LARGE pumps and skimmer and other things and it was a lifesaver!

Late repy, however;

I am currently building a nw home and have specified a generator that will power the entire home, top to bottom. I travel and the thought of leaving my wife home alone, with the fish unattended, is more than I can stand! AAAggggghhhhhhhhh!

Same here! The Mrs and fish don't mix well. When she goes near the tank they hide. When I go near the tanks, it's the exact oposite. BUT, she is great with the five indoor and three outdoor cats. Isn't that a conflict of interest? Fish and cats.
