What to do with 150 Gal Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha that is true.

After 2 weeks of having my baby jacks I really don't want to have to chose one of them to stay =( they are all so great. I noticed today we now have a relationship, Im playing games in the louge room and they will all come out of their log and watch. They even follow me to kitchen when I grab a drink (on the opposite side of tank). They hide for everyone but me, in fact they come out to greet me when I stand in front of glass. fantastic breed they are =).

i think I am going to get a fluval FX5 for my tank ( i just can't justify cost of eheim 2080). although Im looking into the Aqua One brand (most advertised brand at LFS) particularly the 2200 and 2400 model. Does anyone know what they are like?

Dempseys are great fish...

But keep in mind as adults they do not welcome each others company, unless it's a mate.

If you happen to have two males and one female, the weaker male is in big trouble... If you happen to have three males, there will likely be a lot of suppression (aggression) going on... If you happen to have two females and one male, the odd ball female will likely hide most of the time and there is a strong chance whe will be killed by the pair... If you have three females they may or may not get along, it all dpeends on the personalities of your individual fish...

In general, when it comes to CA Cichlids, they do not do well in groups bigger than a pair...

I've nver used one personally, but the FX5 seems to be appreciated by a lot of it's users. A few problems have been pointed out and there are ample threads discussing different methods of overcoming them.

I guess I have no choice but to remove two of them (when they are bigger) and sell back to store. should be another week before I can get money for a canister, still dont know what to get though.

Rena Filstar XP4 is great for the price, but you still have to purchase more media than what it comes with to fill all the baskets/trays.
The Fluval FX5 is just a little more and has a great reputation.
The Eheim filters are kinda in a league of their own... and price shows that the company that makes them knows it.

I just purchased the Rena myself, so I can't tell you anything long term about it, but I cannot imagine an easier setup. Everything snapped together very solid and it makes almost no sound at all. The only thing I did not like about it, which is very minor, is the fact that the box says it comes with all the media, but it does not come with enough media to fill all the trays. It came with 4 sponges, a small bag of Bio Stars, a carbon bag, and a floss screen. There are 8 sections to fill and it came with enough for the bottom tray for the sponges, 1/2 a section of bio stars, 1 section for the carbon bag and the floss screen. Thats 3 1/2 of the 8 sections. I filled the rest with Blue Bio Balls that I already had.

I haven't much about the rena brand, and I don't think that will provide enough turnover for my tank. I did more research on eheim 2080 (money is not problem) but I realized I couldn't get this canister for the simple fact that it is TOO BIG to fit in stand lol. I live in a unit and space is an issue. so Ive decided with a Fluval FX5.

will purchase in the next few days will tell you of my experience.

I have been reding through the forums for a bit. and I was curious regarding the AC110 power filter. is it worth getting two of these for my tank? would it be better to get two AC110 and perhaps one cheaper canister also for my 150gal tank?
I plan on getting 2 AC110 for my mrs 55gal (is this too much?)

I have two AC 110s on my 6' 125 gal and it's decently, but not perfectly, filtered...

In the past I added a couple powerheads and a canister with very fine mechanical media and a UV light and it was as close to perfect as any tank I've owned/seen...

One AC 110 on a 55 gal might be enough, two will not be 'to much'... You could go with AC 70s, but I'm not a fan of the smaller AC models. They work fine, but you just don't get the bang for your buck the way you do with the 110

hello again everyone. Well things have progressed nicely for my tank. thought I would give an update.

My current stock for my 150gal tank (5ftx2ftx2ft) is at...

1* Black Ghost Knife -"spaz"
2* Jack Dempseys (will be removing smaller one [Max], once he is bigger) = "Jack" and "Max"
1* Tiger Oscar - "Leo"
8* Clown Loaches (1 recently died by being sucked into filter when I was cleaning it :( )

1* Feather-fin Catfish
1* Albino Bristlenose Pleco
1* Red-Tailed Shark
1 * Texas Cichlid - "Tex"

still planning on...
firemouth, severum, 2 more suckerfish(bristlenose and maybe a pure pleco)

will post pics of my tank when I get a chance. it is looking great.

current filtration...

After talking with my LFS, I have begun to see things their way. My LFS own two VERY healthy Giant Gouramis, one red and one albino (both called Gavin). They swear by the filtration they use (which they have been using for several years now). On their 7ftx2ft tank (red Giant Gourami resides with multiple pleco and other large cichlids) they only have a single filter for mechanical and it was a import brand called Weipro which was a sponge filter that outputs 2000lph, easy to clean and have never replaced sponge in last 2 years, and VERY cheap. So I purchased one of these....

I also made my own 2nd mechanical filter (which will soon be incorporated in my DIY sump setup as a pre-filter) I took a powerful 2800lph water pump screwed in a piece of PVC piping with holes and placed a HUGE sponge around it for my mechanical filter. it works REALLY well. Soon i will place PVC piping on the output nozzle and direct the outflow into my sump system which will polish and bio-clean the water before another pump(same model as before) forces it upward into a PVC pipe spray bar.

This whole setup will cost my <$40 including both pumps (pumps are unknown brand also but very reliable and cheap).

I will post pics of this setup soon if anybody is interested.
