What to do with fish if you die?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks guys, I'll be well looked after, I have family in the medical area and my health insurance is really good (since my dad was sick my mom always gets crazy good insurance for everyone) so I'm not all too worried about myself.. I mean I dug this pit through doing stupid things I just want to figure this out pronto because I don't want my wet pets (or anyone else for that matter) paying for my mistakes. I'm not the type to worry about myself really (which is probably a bad thing) but more about things I love and my own loved ones, which is why I even bothered posting this

If you know a young child who lost someone close, try to make them believe there's so much more to life and they'll get through it. I didn't believe and started doing bad things to myself when I was barely in middle school yet, now I might be screwed, and I know there's so much more. Sorry if I'm getting too serious but I know this happens all too often

It is something that needs to be though about. This is not the 10 gal fish tank group. Many of us have fish that require a steady supply of five food or at least large quantities of dry food. I guess it just goes along with being prepared for power outages. People die every day for many reasons. Many times not there fault or expecting it.

Contact a local aquarium society. At the club I belong to (North Jersey Aquarium Society), we often receive requests to take in fish, tanks, etc. after some aquarist has passed away. Or have some family member put up a post on MFK. I am sure someone will take your fish.

Say you have a disease and may not make it, is there a way to contact someone/some company to pick up your fish upon not making it? Seriously, not a joke haha i dont want my fish going through hell being cared for by my family (love em but i dont think they could do it w/o mad research which nobody has time for). At this time its not a definite that ill even need this info but i dont want my fish getting tossed out or left in an uncared for tank.. so id like to have it now, id imagine whoever would picks them up would need a bit of a notice to make sure they have room too

Should i call around LFS' or ask other Hobbyists?
Your fish wouldn't go thru hell being cared for by your family. Actually, you put your family thru hell for taking care of them! If you're a responsible person, you need to clean up after your mess.

I have already addressed this with my wife. She knows who to contact so that they can get sold for the maximum amount and to the right people. I have some of the largest fish and aquariums in the area so the demand is limited. I can see her wanting to keep the Fahaka puffer, though.

It would be good for us all to give workable directions to our family. Car accidents etc., can even take out young & healthy people. but my fish would likely be doomed. The only lfs here would be a bad fate, no fish club, no far away keepers would care to drive hours to come get them, & I doubt husband could drive all of them down south in buckets. He has only done 1 5G bucket at a time for me.
Just by the time my funeral was over he'd probably have overfed them so they'd all need huge water changes ;-) Unless my nagging voice haunted him.

BuffaloP, all my best to you! Those tests might come back negative, but either way, take care of yourself.

I know that there are charities in the UK, that take pets that have had their owners die, or become too disabled to look after them, would this be an option?

I have fish friends my wife would contact and he would help rehome them.
