What to do with fry?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hopefully F1 frenata. I am trying very hard to get them to spawn. keeping the pH right at 6.8 dH right around 5 doing 50% a week WC's and setting up a new tank for them (another 75) that is somewhat of a biotope with sand lots of driftwood, rocks, a light flow from a powerhead (240 gph hydor koralia) and some artifical roots. Trying to make it just like the pics of the trinidad rivers I have seen.

I do buy spawns, Frenata is one of the more easily spawned members of th saxatalis group so if they are compatable you should be successful. There are also fish clubs in Raliegh and Charlotte, CAAS has a Fall auction in Oct, and RAS has a spring aution in late Fed or early March. Plenty of people is both places would like baby pikes. We also have two auctions a year in Atlanta. Ken

I am not sure what the heck is going on with them. Even since I posted this thread they have been doing these "Test" or "false" passes. The female will pass over the same spot (and it is always the very same rock) like she is about to lay eggs and then the male follows right behind like he is going to fertilize them but never any eggs. they will do this somewhere between 6 - 10 times or so and still nothing. does anyone know what could be going on?

just give them time my jags did that for about 2 months before they laid eggs specially if its their first brood

Cool! Thanks for the info I was starting to worry nothing was going to happen. I believe it will be their first brood unless they mated in the wild before they were caught.

Normally pikes would spawn on the underside of something, or on the roof of a cave, I have seen "dry runs" go on for quite a while with Sveni and Sp. Pacaya
