Hi!

This is my first post here. I Need some help on my sick Ansorgii and with all of you experts here this must be the best place to come for help.

I dont really know what is wrong with him but I got home the other day and found him on his side breathing heavily. He tried to swim but did just end up on his back. Now he is just laying in the same place (on his side) still breathing but in a very fast pace.

There is a delhezi, senegalus, endlicheri and 2 spotted gars in the same tank (none of them are bigger than 12cm) and they are all fine so it's nothing wrong with the water. He is a lot bigger than all of the others so I don't think there is a chance of him being injured by the others.

I did change a small amount of water the night before this happend but only 5 liters so that should not be a factor in this. Besides, all of the other fishes are fine.

I have moved him to another tank but I do not have high hopes for him to survive.

Do you think Ansorgiis are more vulnerable than other Polypterus?

I dont want to put him to sleep so do you think there is something that I can do for him. I don't want him to suffer.

Thanks!

bump for a great guy!

you did well moving him to another tank, just makes sure there is enough oxygen and adequate filtration in the water, dont use salt as it could make it even worse, and dont use direct tap water, but use stock water instead. That is to focus on treatment at this moment. Don't try too feed anything till there is a sign of recovery. Avoid any chunks of meaty food, and give something which can be easily swallowed, ie sinking pellets.
How big is your bigtank?can you post pics of your tank?

Why not use salt? It's what I do to my bichirs if they do this kind of scenario. Usually from nitrite or ammonia poisoning. Salt helps it to get rid of those poison in their bodies.

I visited this guy a couple of weeks ago and judging from the quantity of plants/size tank/size fish I'd say a nitrate poisoning is pretty unlikely. I'm with king on the temp and salt.. A picture would be great! I'm so sorry for this inconvenience bro!

hoppas han klarar sig!

Hi guys!

Im really happy for all the respons!

I do a small water change (5-10 liters) in the tank every other day and take out all the food left overs right away after feeding so I can't see it being nitrate poisoning.

My tank is 200 liters. Not a big tank but it's a grow out and the fish are all very small as my bro "ettfett" said, thanks for the support by the way!

Well, her's some pictures. Sorry for the bad quality.

Thanks!

do you have a pic of the ansorgii? maybe its something obvious once you see it? King is one of the most extreme fish/poly keepers on here, if he says high temp and salt then salt and high temp it is. just remember to up the airation when you raise the temp. Just the fact he's still hanging in there is a good sign.

sorry for not using swedish btw but politeness requires us to use the language of the majority.
