balton777 i am contemplating keeping the 55 since no one is interested. i think i might just set it back up when the girlfriend moves and takes some stuff so i will have the room. i really want to keep my JD's to try and breed and my firemouth because he is handicapped and has a deformed mouth. but i could get rid of the FH and cons. what could i put in the 55 if i put it back up given my current stock?

If it were my set up, I would breed the JD's in the 55g and trade the FH in at the lfs for a GT in the 90. As for the 3 cons, only keep same sex or they'll def breed and beat the crap out of the other fish. You'll love having the GT they're awesome fish, especially once they put on some size. Same with the FH too though, they're pretty cool if you're into them but are so brutal it'll most likely be a one-fish tank. You could also trade in some of the convicts for another medium size cichlid and add a few Silver Dollars.

oh the possiblities. my FH isnt very aggressive i think because i put him in the tank when he was a lot smaller so he got owned by my other fish. i really want to try a FH, GT, JD tank because of the colors of the fish. i guess i will see what happens. as for the cons i believe they are all female they all have some orange on thier bellies that is female right? i also thought the males had pointed dorsal fins and the cons with orange bellies have pointed fins so i am confused. please keep the suggestions comming i appreciate all of them

Pointed fins are not an accurate way to sex cichlids. The cons with the orange bellies are females no matter what the fins look like.

Your FH isn't overly aggressive because he's not mature yet. Well I guess they're not super aggressive killers 100% of the time so it may work but most likely won't because of tank size. You can tell by the responses most people agree. Have a divider or the 55 ready in case you have to separate. And remember, you don't want to breed the JD's along with other cichlids sharing a 90 either. I have a feeling you're going to learn by doing which is fine too. Good luck with everything.

ok so i was thinking set up the 55 again put the cons and the firemouth in there, possibly get rid of my female JD, and just have the FH, JD, GT in the 90. would that work or should i get rid of the FH altogether. i really want to try and have colorful fish in the 90. or i was just going to get rid of the cons. how about 2 FH's in the 90, and the JD's in the 55? or would the FH's kill eachother. i would really like to get a GT could i have the JD's and the GT together in the 90 with out problems? so many questions sorry to keep asking i just want some good input from people who understand fish

well looks like i will be getting rid of the FH, i really like him but i want to have more fish in the tank. when i get a house and a bigger tank i will get one again. thanks for the input everyone. oh what about the JD's and GT in the 90 would that work?

I believe an earlier post stated that mating JD's will tear up anything in the tank. CA/SA cichlid's are very aggressive, especially after they get 6+ inches. I learned the hard way as well. In other words, I ignored advice and/or kept asking until I got the answer(s) somewhat closer to what I wanted to hear. They will fool you into thinking you can house many of them one tank, and then one day...all heck will break loose and you will feel terrible for letting your fish get hammered.

I guess what I am trying to say is that if you are repeating your questions, you have already gotten your answers, just not the one's you wanted to hear.

Breeding CA/SA's basically need their own tank, unless you have a monster tank or want some beat up fish.

thanks everyone for the advice i think i will put my JD's in the 55 and do something with the 90. i will see i have some figuring out to do. i appreciate every ones input. maybe i will get rid of the female JD and get another male and do the GT, JD thing in the 90 with no breeding. i think that would work. right?
