What to feed a small fire eel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 14 inch fire eel and the only thing he will eat is live night crawlers. I have tried many frozen foods and he just ignores them. When he was smaller i had to cut the worms in half so he could eat them, now he has no trouble eating full sized worms. I usually feed him about every two days.

the one i have is around 5". how much of a nightcrawler were you feeding him at that size?

Congrats, but you can't say you got something without pics.

I have have raised two from that size to the fat 18" inches they are a little over one year later. Frozen blood worms are great, but the big favorite are red wrigglers (earthworms that are smaller than night crawlers.) They put on good weight with those in comparison to the blood worms, and they really encouraged them to hand feed. I also feed defrosted krill, cocktail shrimp, talapia, etc. cut to a good size. However, a majority of their diet are earthworms, and everyone has graduated to the biggest night crawlers I can find. They took to the red wrigglers quickly, and as they got used to me hand feeding, they started trying anything I'd hold in the tank for them.

G/L with you little guy. They are some of my favorite fish.

should i hold the worms in front of him or let him find them for himself? the only competition he has for them is a crawdad or if the arowana decides to come to the bottom. He has inspected the red worms pieces that i put in there but i haven't seen him eat one. but then again it has only been one night.

I would try holding the worm's in front of him , great fun to hand feed and it makes it easier to to check him over in future if there are any problem's if he is used to you .

Yeah, if you can get the to hand feed its great fun. They also become extremely friendly when hand fed. But, if they don't want to hand feed, I'd drop them in front of his hiding spot. Eventually, he won't be able to resist those wriggly little guys and start hand feeding. Be patient and hold still if he seems nervous at first. Have fun!

well he is still too shy to hand feed and i am about to go get some bloodworms. But here are some pics
